Art & DT Curriculum (Primary)
At North Star 180, our Art & DT curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all pupils. Learning is carefully planned to be inclusive, accessible, and meaningful, supporting pupils to develop knowledge, skills, and understanding that are relevant to their lives. Through a well-sequenced and personalised approach, pupils are supported to make progress from their individual starting points, building confidence, independence, and readiness for future learning.
Intent
The intent of the Art & DT curriculum in primary is to:
· ensure all pupils produce creative, imaginative artwork whilst gaining the skills to n a variety of art techniques and styles to build a foundation of skills.
· ensure children will build confidence in a variety of art techniques and styles to build a foundation of skills.
· enable pupils to explore, express, and communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences through a wide range of artistic media and techniques.
· Allow pupils to work at their own pace, make choices, and experience success regardless of prior attainment or barriers to learning.
The curriculum is ambitious and inclusive, ensuring all pupils can achieve and succeed regardless of need and develop their motor skills and resilience.
Implementation
The Art & DT curriculum in primary is implemented
through:
· A carefully sequenced curriculum that builds skills progressively across year groups, revisiting and embedding key techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media
· Opportunities for the evaluation of artist’s work and their own work encourages the discussion among peers and teachers showing the value placed on communication in learning
· Varied task types cater to different learning styles across the school, with a particular focus on developing fine and gross motor skills.
· Hands-on exploration of materials and tools including opportunities for tactile, sensory-rich experiences.
· Assessment is ongoing and primarily formative, using observation, discussion and pupil reflection.
Impact
The impact of the Art & DT curriculum is demonstrated
by:
