Forest school

At North Star 180, Forest School is a unique way of building independence and self-esteem in our young people, introducing them to the natural world at a time when it is vital for children to understand their impact on the environment, learn about the seasons and help build resilience.

Our local environment.

Forest School is an opportunity for the children of NS180 to look at and have a go at new, creative experiences in an outdoor setting in a safe way.  Our children will be given opportunities to learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks and most importantly to use their own initiative to solve problems, work with others and given the strength and courage to ask for help if needed.

Through careful planning of Forest School experiences, we strive to increase self-esteem, improve children’s concentration, fine motor skills, attendance, behaviour and lead to academic achievement.

We aim to cultivate and build a respect for the nature and the world around us through learning experiences in our local woodlands, waterways and plateaus, inspiring our children to value biodiversity and develop a understanding of how to promote the environment.

The children will experience a minimum of six sessions per term in our Forest School to immerse themselves in nature and deepen their knowledge and understanding of the flora, fauna that surround them.  The Forest School spaces will be used to the fullest all year round, with lessons put together to complement the changing conditions, resources and challenges of the natural world through the seasons.

At NS180 our Forest School Learning Experiences create opportunities for cross-curricular links to Science, Mathematics, English, Geography and Art as well as developing new skills the challenge of breathing life into a fire to the cook using sticks, grill and Dutch ovens, building natural shelters, stone fishing, hammocks, tars and knot work.
